This summer, the Archaeology Department at Kwilmu’kw Maw-klusuaqn Negotiation Office (KMKNO) welcomed a returning summer student for her third season with our organization.
When she first started with KMKNO, Jodi Howe, of Sipekne’katik Mi’kmaq community, was a keen 10th grader with dreams of becoming an Archaeologist. Having attended the Nationhood Conference in the spring of 2012, as a youth delegate from her community, Jodi learned more about the work of KMKNO and took the opportunity to speak to our Staff Archaeologist, Dr. Heather MacLeod-Leslie about working in this field.
That initial introduction fuelled Jodi and drew her to inquire about working as a summer student later that same year. Seeing this as a welcomed opportunity to build capacity within our own Mi’kmaw communities, KMKNO partnered with Sipekne’katik to create a summer position for Jodi in her dream field.
We are very pleased to say, that after three summers with us, Jodi has graduated from High School and has started her first year at Memorial University of Newfoundland studying Archaeology! We know that Jodi will go on to do great things and we are proud that our office has contributed to her undoubtedly, successful career!
To hear about her experience in Jodi’s own words, continue to read below:
