By no means is beading just recently catching on in popularity. The art has been around for centuries and more and more youth in Membertou have been taking up beading in recent years. Beading became popular in the seventeenth century when wool and linen replaced leather as the material of choice for Mi’kmaw garments. Lace-like designs that had been painted on leather garments by Mi’kmaw women were replaced by designs done with glass beads on.
