“Kwe and greetings to Mi’kmaq Elders, Keptins, Chiefs, Mi’kmaq community members, and Provincial and Federal Dignitaries and leaders and other visitors on our lands we know as Mi’kma’ki. Once again it is an honour for me to address you as Grand Keptin of the Mi’kmaq Grand Council. Since our first treaty day celebration 26 years ago, this honour and duty of speaking to you has been an honoured tradition for the Mi’kmaq Grand Council. In 1986, Grand Chief Donald Marshall Sr.’s then declared that we will reaffirm our treaty promises every year as stipulated in the 1752 article 6 to “Renew their Friendships and Submissions.”
