In the month of November, The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq’s Mi’kmawey Green Communities program (MGCP) received the Community Project of the Year award at the 2022 Divert NS Mobius Awards of Environmental Excellence.

The Community Project of the Year Mobius Award is awarded to a not-for-profit organization or community group that has developed or implemented an effective project or event that engages their community in reducing waste and recycling activities.

Through pilot projects, community engagement, and working with leadership, MGCP works to assist Mi’kmaw communities reach their goals to become greener, cleaner, and more sustainable. The notable project that the MGCP implemented in communities was the Diversion Starts at Home project. This project is focused on engaging with communities and identifying existing barriers regarding solid waste management. This project started through a needs assessment that provided the initial information on solid waste management, then workshops were held in each community on the topics of composting, proper waste sorting and disposal based off each county’s specific rules for sorting and waste disposal. Engagement sessions were also held to get more detailed feedback of waste management barriers at the residential level and a waste audit was conducted providing data on the state of solid waste management at the community level.
