The Cape Breton Highlands will come alive for five full days from August 2nd to August 6th, 2022 with an Indigenous Cultural Camp for educators.

Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey (MK) is hosting Minua’tuek Ta’n I’tlo’ltimkip (Bringing Back the Mi’kmaq Way) which will highlight Traditional Mi’kmaq Knowledge including language, harvesting, music, dance, art and traditional teachings which are necessary in nurturing the spirit of our Indigenous learners.

MK is working with community partners including Union of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq, Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources, Mi’kmaq Rights Initiative, Exploring the Bras D’or, and Treaty Education to host the camp.

It will take place on Hunters Mountain, with participants staying on site for the duration of the camp. The itinerary is still being finalized, but activities will include drumming, moose hide preparation, water conservation, etc. as well as workshops on language.

Traditional knowledge keepers and support staff will facilitate sessions for educators to gain knowledge and experience in storytelling, astronomy, medicines, dancing, drumming, singing, Mi’kmaq protocols, and our relationship with Mother earth.

Minua’tuek Ta’n I’tlo’ltimkip is meant for educators across the province in Nova Scotia, we will guarantee two seats from each of the 13 communities, plus 10 seats for provincial schools.
