As we continue our exploration of Mi’kmaw Cultural Tourism in Nova Scotia, this month’s article highlights the Mi’kmaw community of Paqtnkek and the exciting vision this community has for sharing their culture with Nova Scotians, Canadians, and the world.

Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation is a vibrant and welcoming community that has always been a traditional stopping point for Mi’kmaw travelling to and from Unama’ki. To this day, travellers are always welcome guests in Paqtnkek, where the friendly people make everyone feel at home and guests can stop to fill gas tanks, purchase convenience items, and enjoy some entertainment at the Bayside Travel Centre. Now plans are underway to expand the offerings available to tourists and travellers.

Rose Paul is the Executive Development Officer (EDO) for Bayside Corporate in Paqtnkek, and an incredible community leader, go-getter, and visionary. Over the course of the past few years, discussion about the development of a Paqtnkek cultural tourism strategy has grown and evolved, based on community values and priorities. Together with Tracey Boutilier, a Nova Scotia based tourism consultant, and a strong local Tourism Committee, this team is creating a plan based on solid research and best practices, along with a grassroots foundation and extensive community guidance. There have been many passionate conversations about authenticity and what can and cannot be shared within a tourism context.
