On Thursday January 31, 2019, Pictou Landing First Nation, along with about 400 others gathered at the communities gymnasium to begin the one year countdown to the closure of the Boat Harbour Treatment Facility.
“The end date is so sacred to us. Fifty three (53) years we have carried this with us.” Chief Andrea told the crowded gymnasium. The Chief’s speech presented the unified front from the community that they will not accept an extension.
The community worked together, a sign was painted by community member Cheryl Denny, representing a replica of what A’se’k use to be. At the top of the countdown sign are the numbers 365, everyday the sign will change as the community gets one day closer to the toxic effluent stop pumping.
