The Nova Scotia College of Early Childhood Education recognized Orange Shirt Day October 3rd by wearing orange shirts and learning about the significance of this day. The students were told Phyllis Webstad’s story and engaged in discussion regarding their feelings towards the story. Many students identified feeling upset or sad that these events had taken place. As a College, we discussed the importance of recognizing the history of residential schools and the impact it may have on some of the families they will work with in their time at Early Childhood Educators.
Students took part in a scavenger hunt and crossword puzzle that provided information about Aboriginal peoples and culture in Nova Scotia, as well as the rest of Canada. There was positive discussion occurring throughout the small event and interest in how to work towards creating positive changes and reconciliation. Every Child Matters.
