Glooscap First Nation is a relatively small Mi’kmaq community located near the Minas Basin of the Bay of Fundy, a few kilometres outside of Hantsport, Nova Scotia. Created in the early 1980’s, it has roughly 365 community members with approximately 65 residing within the boundaries of the First Nation. Although they may be small in number, they are big in vision and strong in courage.
In early 2014, community leaders were looking for a business strategy or model that would generate stronger economic development and create employment opportunities while safeguarding the community’s heritage and values. This vision flourished in April 2014, when Glooscap First Nation’s Chief and Council officially established a centralized business entity that would manage all of the community’s revenue generating businesses.
