For time eternal, the Mi’kmaw community of Lennox Island First Nation has called this small island located in beautiful Malpeque Bay home. Located off the northwest coast of Prince Edward Island, this is one of the most dynamic and thriving communities in the Atlantic Region. The determined leaders of Lennox Island First Nation continue to invest in infrastructure and work hard to develop new businesses to create good jobs for community members and generate stronger revenues. Earlier this Fall, the community officially opened its new marine services facility.

Lennox Island First Nation has 32 communal commercial fishing vessels, 10 of which are operated under the Band-owned Fisherman’s Pride (9 lobster fishing vessels and 1 snow crab fishing vessel). Other licenses have been designated to community band members. Having fishing vessels towed or transported to marine services facilities located outside the community was always a costly and highly inconvenient method of getting their boats repaired and maintained — especially when a commercial fishing vessel broke down during fishing season. This took a lot of time, the costs were high and too often, the community lost revenues due to inactive vessels.

Community leaders decided that the time had come to invest in the development of a marine services facility that would be located within the community. Months of discussion and planning followed including the development of a business plan. All of ...
