Day 1:
Lindsey Thompson, Community Oral Health Services Coordinator First Nations Inuit Health Branch – Atlantic Region for NB acted as MC for the event, welcoming guests and presenters as well as introducing Elder Carolyn Landry who graciously accepted the invitation to open the professional development session with a prayer.
Sessions began with an IPAC (infection prevention and control) presentation by Wendy Wells, IPAC officer for Indigenous Service Canada (ISC) community oral health services and registered dental hygienist. Wendy provided an overview of the new site specific IPAC manual that will be housed in each community oral health services clinic, as well as our new IPAC monitoring record book. Wendy touched on IPAC regulations for providers as well as Community Oral Health Initiative (COHI) AIDES.
Wendy Wells continued to provide a radiology refresher regarding radiology safety in the dental clinic when exposing x-rays.
After lunch, Sydney Nelson (ISC registered dental hygienist) with support from Wendy Wells and Kala MacLean (ISC registered dental hygienist) provided a presentation on COHI and Community. The presentation included methods of community engagement, definitions of community as well as ideas on how to present oral health prevention materials to groups of interest such as care-givers of young children and pre and post-natal groups. ...
