It is an Eskasoni tradition that dates back 49 years – the Eskasoni Winter Carnival. This year the winter carnival came in like a storm. The community of Eskasoni needed normalcy and the winter carnival was something everyone needed.

After two years of covid setbacks, the winter carnival returned on February 23-26, 2023. This year’s winter carnival name was Wetqanipuk meaning mild winter. The name selection of the winter carnival is also part of the event when the community has a chance to pick a Mi’kmaw name for the carnival. It was Nadine Bernard’s entry that was selected by the winter carnival committee and Nadine won a 100-dollar food voucher.

This year’s winter carnival was bigger and better. One of the coolest winter carnival highlights was the winter carnival bed race. The bed race attracted so much attention that even CBC News was there to report cover the bedrace. To our delight the bed race story made it on the CBC National News for all of Canada to see. Bed race organizer and volunteer, Starr Paul was shocked!

The other highlight of the winter carnival was the number of events and how the community stepped up and coordinated new events. The winter carnival hosted events like basketball, ATV poker run, poker tournaments fishing derby, hockey tournament, pool tournament and weight lifting.
