Renowned human rights activist, and language and culture warrior, Sister Dorothy Moore celebrated both her 89th birthday and the launch of her book A Journey of Love and Hope: The Inspirational Words of a Mi’kmaq Elder.

In A Journey of Love and Hope, Sister Dorothy’s words are collected in print, as she originally spoke them, for the first time. Included are speeches, talks, presentations, and ceremonies delivered between 1985 and 2015 to universities, government departments, and Indigenous organizations and gatherings. Thematic sections include Culture and Language, Spirituality, Racism, Education, and Prayers and Ceremonies, framed by Ikantek (introductions) from well-known Mi’kmaw writers and educators, as well as an Associate Sister of the Sisters of St Martha.

Senator Christmas welcomed Sister Dorothy back home after the Sons of Membertou paid tribute with the Mi’kmaw Honour song. “sometimes when that honour song is played at certain occasions. It certainly means a lot on this occasion when we’re honoring Sister Dorothy’s life and her book, it’s certainly one of those special occasions”.

Dr. Mary Jane Harkins, Professor of Education at Mount Saint Vincent University, originally wanted to write an article about Sister Dorothy and shoot a short video. From there, the project blossomed to the book plus a full-length documentary that received a standing ovation at this year’s FIN Atlantic Film Festival.
