2022 marks the 29th year that we have celebrated the life of Sammy Gehue, the son of Ginger Dennis and the late Sam Julian of Sipekne’katik First Nation.
Sammy was a young boy from Sipekne’katik who lived with an incurable blood disease called Fanconi’s Anemia. And although he suffered by having this disease he showed great determination in fighting this disease the award was created on his behalf, Sammy was present for the first award but later succumbed to his illness in 1993.
These awards are presented to students who have each shown exceptional leadership skills, courage, kindness, and community care that has been recognized by their teachers, peers, and families.
This year, we have made an adjustment to our award structure, rather than rank and award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, we have decided to recognize all of our young leaders and their accomplishments equally.

Acelynn Simon, of Eskasoni First Nation, was nominated by her Godmother Jessie for her commitment to her education and the strides Acelynn has made in sports these last three years.
Though sometimes shy, Acelynn has found her courage through sports like hockey and softball. Acelynn is part of the Blizzard’s Hockey team, plays for a local minor hockey team and Sydney’s softball league. She can be found cheering on her teammates and encouraging them to keep trying.
