As we head into the end of the summer, our students begin to wrap up their time with us at here at The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM). It has been an extraordinary summer to say the least, as our summer students have had a lot of opportunities to travel, conduct field work, and host events within the 8 mainland Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia. Our summer students worked on various projects and programs and facilitated our CMM youth days and MCG days, and we would like to highlight and thank each student for their dedicated work with us during these past weeks.

Summer Students Hannah Doull and Sebastian Hill worked on the NLF Gulf Portion Nature Legacy Fund in the Department of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries Management that focused on water temperature and quality monitoring in West Pictou River, East Pictou River, Middle Pictou River, and River Philip. After installing 10 temperature monitors in each river, Hannah and Sebastian revisited each site bi-weekly to take water quality data to help monitor water quality issues within the watershed, and then compare current data vs past data to view trends. “My experience at the Mi’kmaq Conservation Group has taught me the importance of having healthy rivers and streams, and how valuable this work is to the environment,” said Hannah. “It was a fun experience and very educational,” said Sebastian.
