I have recently begun to work as coordinator of the IRS Commemoration Project – Phase 3 – Design to continue the work of this important project with the team of Executive Director, Tim Bernard and Administrator, Sheila Pierro-Trembley at Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre (MDCC).
In keeping with the intent of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action #76, Missing Children and Burial Sites and #79 Commemoration, and the IRS Settlement Agreement, the IRS Commemoration Project, has gained the input and guidance of the Survivors and descendants through hosting the events in Phase 1 – Survivors Engagements, in 2018/19 and Phase 2 – Research/Engagements in 2020/21 and in October 2021, hosting the Healing and Resilience Gathering for Survivors and Descendants and participating in the National Historic Site Commemoration at the former IRS site in Shubenacadie on September 30, 2021.
It has been our privilege to work with the Survivors community throughout Mi’kmaki and Wolastokqiyik, on the Atlantic Regional IRS Commemoration. We want you to know that we have been listening and have incorporated the input from Survivors into this project.
