The Red Tribe Boxing Club was in action in the Port Hawkesbury Civic Center on May 14/2022. A crowd of over 500 people attended the event. This event marks the 14th boxing card that Red Tribe has hosted in the past six years. It’s the first time ever that we have been invited to host a boxing match outside of our Mi’kmaq communities; “it developed a new relationship” says, head coach, Barry Bernard. The event was a great success with teams from Pembroke Ontario, Truro, New Waterford, and St Peters taking part. Given the amazing opportunity from the town of Port Hawkesbury, the boxers had the chance to show their talent. One of the highlights of the match was a display of the Mi’kmaw drumming and dancing. The event was emceed by Jeff ward, of Membertou. The evening started off with Morgan Toney, 22-year-old Mi’kmaq singer-songwriter/fiddler, playing a few tunes to entertain the audience. Toney is also the recipient of two ECMA awards for 2022. Traditional drummers and dancers were also part of showcase, with an honour song that started the first bell of the evening. Organizing such an event wasn’t easy with this Pandemic; a few teams couldn’t participate because of Covid. One team from Ontario backed out which decreased the number of fights to ten.
Even with the hardship of gathering enough boxers the evening card consisted of 9 Fights with one exhibition by new Red Tribe member, Triceson Marshall. Marshall’s opponent was Aiden Jesson from North Syd ...
