April was another busy month at the Atlantic First Nations Water Authority (AFNWA). Firstly, Congratulations goes out to water operator Corbin Stevens from Pictou Landing First Nation, who recently passed his Water Distribution Class 2 and Water Treatment Class 1 courses! Upon receipt of his Class II certification, he becomes the first community-based Water Operator in Pictou Landing First Nation to achieve this level.
On Thursday April 7th, the Government of Canada released their 2022 Budget, where they committed to providing Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) with an additional $173.2 million over 10 years starting in 2022-23. The funding will support the transfer of water and wastewater services in 17 communities in Mi’kma’ki and Wolastokuk to AFNWA. Over the coming months, we’ll be engaging with communities and respective Chiefs and Councils to ensure a full understanding of what this funding means for all concerned. As previously mentioned, in December we were invited by ISC to submit our 10-year capital and operations budget request.
On April 20th we hosted an All-Chiefs Workshop at the Doubletree in Dartmouth. We were privileged to be joined by the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations, Kody Blois, Member of Parliament (MP) for Kings-Hants, and Jaime Battiste, MP for Sydney-Victoria and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations.
