We had the honour and privilege to sit with Elder Joe Mike Michael of Sipekne’katik NS who came and had some pɨtewey (bit-eh-whey) and shared his lived experiences with our team at Ulnooweg.
Elder Joe Mike, we learned, leads a remarkably interesting life. He has worn many hats over the years: he spent 27 years as an RCMP police officer, and then upon retirement, joined the security team at the Halifax International Airport, became a freelance leadership consultant, Reiki Level 1 specialist, and a lifetime commitment as a Pipe Carrier and Sacred Fire Keeper – but no hat has been more prestigious than that of husband, father, and grandfather.
