March was a busy month for us at the Atlantic First Nations Water Authority. After two months of staff working primarily from home due to the fifth wave of COVID-19, we returned to the office on March 1st. And what a memorable day it was!

We were honoured to have Millbrook Elder Patsy Paul Martin visit both our offices in Truro and Millbrook. She shared stories about Mi’kmaq values, culture, and history, then performed a smudging ceremony of our buildings and staff.

At the beginning of the month, we released the Winter 2022 edition of our quarterly newsletter “Samqwan/Samaqan & Sage”. In this issue, you will find updates on our recent progress and milestones, upcoming communications and outreach plans, and an employee spotlight on AFNWA’s Project Engineer. Our next issue will be published this Spring as we journey towards full operation of water and wastewater services in participating First Nations communities. On March 7th, we welcomed the newest and twenty-second member of the AFNWA team, Utility Technologist Mark E. MacDonald, who hails from Cape Breton. Mark is working with our Superintendent of Technical Services, Jeff Wujcik, who is also from Unama’ki.
