The following Eulogy was delivered by Donald Julien, CMM Executive Director and Keptin of the Sante’ Mawio’mi at the funeral of Stephen “Ekien” Joseph Julian, affectionately known as Flash.
Good morning, family members and friends of Steve (Ekien) Julian, better known to all of Steve’s friends as Flash! I have been asked by the Julian Family to deliver a Eulogy for my dear friend and cousin.
Wela’lioq Becky and the family for giving me the honour and privilege to say a few words about our late friend. I’ve known Ekien for over fifty years and I had the opportunity to have played hockey with him and against him.
I came to work for the Union of Nova Scotia Indians as a Researcher in 1970 and our offices were here in Indian Brook. As you all know, almost everyone at that time had a nickname… their was David “Cowboy” Paul, Gerald “Indian” Maloney, Jackie “Wowie” Gehue, Leo “Chookie” Sack, Bill “Yogi Bear” Meuse to name a few. It was his quickness on the ball diamond that our dear friend earned him the name Flash and I had the opportunity to play softball with Steve and against him. Flash was a real sports minded person, always up beat friendly person, always positive in winning and gracious in losing.
It is my ultimate privilege, honour and pleasure to say a few words about our beloved friend Ekien (Flash), Steve’s love of over 61 years Becky will miss her friend and husband, Steve’s family will also mis ...
