Following the events of the Freedom Day March on June, 21, Day of Reflection, Healing July 1, Landyn’s Journey of Awareness Walk and Sipekne’katik taking the lead on the ground search at the Shubenacadie Residential School site and with the public announcements of so many unmarked graves across Canada on or near residential school sites people have been coming forward asking questions while seeking to understand what has happened at these schools and the residential school right here in Shubenacadie. Most of the people asking questions have very little to no contact with indigenous communities which we are looking to improve on. Some couldn’t believe what they were hearing about the treatment children dealt with at these schools.

We felt it was pertinent to understanding how Mi’kmaw children/people lived prior to attending these schools to even begin to understand why the exposure to these schools were so devastating to them, their culture, Language and traditions.

On August 8, 2021, Sipekne’katik First Nation, started hosting ‘in person’ Mi’kmaq Cultural and History teachings along the river bank on Indian School Road. At the foothill of where the Residential School once stood. These teachings are held on Sunday and Wednesday evenings (Facebook group, @Sipeknekatik Cultural and History Teachings).
