The safety knives and waterproof hotline stickers created as part of the Mainland Mi’kmaq Marine Mammal Response Program project.

Within the last few years, Mainland Mi’kmaw communities have expressed interest in engaging in marine animal response. The increased interest in marine animal response is partly due to concerns regarding the status of North Atlantic Right Whale in Mi’kma’ki (Atlantic Canada). With less than 400 individuals remaining, The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has these whales listed as Critically Endangered and in Canada, they are listed as Endangered under the Species at Risk Act.
