The Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs express their deepest condolences to all those affected by yesterday’s tragic incident in Nova Scotia.

“We all have been shaken by what has happened in our region and the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia mourn the losses of these individuals alongside our family, friends and neighbours,” said Chief Sidney Peters, Co-Chair of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs.

As many Nova Scotians know, the devastating loss of life will not soon be forgotten.

“With so many questions left unanswered, this is truly heartbreaking for everyone in Nova Scotia and Canada,” said Chief Terrance Paul, Co-Chair of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs. “We understand how a tragedy can impact an entire community and we want the people of Portapique, and surrounding areas, to know that we are grieving with you.”

Yesterday’s shootings resonated a shock and sadness throughout the province and the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs want to thank and recognize the efforts of law enforcement and all those involved in protecting people.

“Our police officers work tirelessly – everyday – to protect the lives of all of us.
