Casen Augustine.

The Nova Scotia Arm Wrestling Championships were held in Sydney, Cape Breton on April 27, 2019. The event was packed with athletes from all over Nova Scotia, including their families who were there to cheer them on. Some of these “pullers” or arm wrestlers are youth from our Mi’kmaw communities of Eskasoni, We’koqma’q and Sipekne’katik.

Eskasoni’s Liam and Layne Gould, who are brothers, competed in the men’s and juniors’ divisions, with Layne Gould winning his first Provincial championships and he did it impressively. Layne was undefeated in his right arm Junior class. Also from Eskasoni, Dre’ Denny won Bronze for the Province and for his community. Sipekne’katiks youth, Casen Augustine and his father, Myles “Kru” Augustine, represented their community really well! Myles’s son, Casen, won two silvers in his first Provincial championships – job well done! Also from Eskasoni, coach and trainer, and competitor, Trevor Sanipass, was there to coach but he also competed in the event. Trevor won third in his left arm open class and he was quite pleased with is performance, “I’m really excited about the caliber of arm wrestlers in this event but I’m so proud of the Indigenous arm wrestlers who came and won! They all did amazing in their first Nova Scotia championships”. Trevor noted all the arm wrestlers who competed at this event are qualified to compete at the Nationals or the Canadian Arm Wrestling Championships that are to be held in Edmonton, Alberta, in July 2019.

Congratulations and way to go!!!
