Judge Shelly Martin.

On February 7, 2019, Shelly Martin of Millbrook made history as the first Mi’kmaw woman to be appointed as Adjudicator of the Small Claims Court of Nova Scotia. Sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Hunt, before well-wishers, friends and family, Shelly brings 11 years of legal practice and a her characteristic humour to the court.

“My parents used to leave me to babysit my younger sisters, telling them I was the “supreme being” while Mom and Dad were out. I guess I grew into the role,” she jokes.

“As word spread of the appointment I’ve had people ask about what this means. I’ll use Judge Judy as an example.
