On the banks of the Richibucto River north of Moncton, New Brunswick, lies one of the largest Mi’kmaw communities in the Atlantic Region known as “River of Fire.” With a population of over 3300, Elsipogtog First Nation (formerly Big Cove) is in the process of developing not only a unique commercial fisheries enterprise (CFE), but a very prosperous one which now includes a double-bay vessel servicing facility.
Elsipogtog First Nation has close to 100 fishing licenses for lobster and snow crab access. Although other species are harvested commercially, lobster and snow crab harvesting bring in the vast majority of revenues.
