Jarvis was raised in We’koqma’q, Unama’ki and graduated from a Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey school. He holds degrees from Saint Mary’s University (cum laude), Dalhousie Law School, and is a non-practicing member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. He has worked as in-house counsel for The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq as well as a senior policy analyst with the Nova Scotia Office of Aboriginal Affairs. He has extensive engagement experience with First Nations communities and organizations, mainly in health and education, and with the urban Aboriginal community. He has spoken and presented at many events, including Dalhousie Law School and Dalhousie Medical School, and led the development of the Donald Marshall Junior Memorial Award. He also possesses knowledge on Aboriginal law, and Mi’kmaw history, culture, and language, often acting as a cultural language resource and liaison, and he has been recognized as a youth leader by numerous organizations and committees.
Finally, in helping others live healthy and active lifestyles, he is a part-time Group Fitness class instructor with GoodLife Fitness, where he instructs three LesMills programs. It is a passion that has led to media articles on his weight-loss success and he has received several awards and recognitions for his work, including a 2013 GoodLife Fitness Core Value Award, the GoodLife Fitness 2014 HRM Instructor of Excellence award, a Top 20 Instructor of Excellence finalist Canada-wide, a Top 1000 and Top 500 GoodLife Fitness Associate, and a Top Three Best Fitness Instructor in The Coast’s Best of Halifax 2014 contest. Jarvis travels throughout the world to further his training, education, and instructing, and will be attending a LesMills event in Amsterdam this October.
He joined APC in July 2013, and is now the Director of Health until March 31, 2018, continuing to do his part in working towards First Nations health. He lives in Jipuktuk/Halifax with his fiancé Kerrianne.
