Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) is hosting a meeting on terrestrial species at risk for Indigenous communities and organizations in the Maritime provinces. This gathering is for those who work on or are interested in becoming involved in terrestrial species at risk programs.
Following input from Indigenous communities and organizations already working on ecological projects such as species at risk, this event will weave culturally-appropriate ways of meeting and sharing stories about our work, listening to presentations by colleagues to learn new skills, and enjoying a short field trip on the land.
Although space is limited, we are encouraging youth and Elders who have great interest in species at risk to attend or contact us to find out how you can get involved in the conservation efforts in your area.
(The Aboriginal Fund for Species at Risk (AFSAR), established in 2004-2005, supports the development of Indigenous capacity to participate actively in the implementation of Species at Risk Act (SARA). The protection of species at risk in Canada depends upon a meaningful collaboration with Indigenous People and organizations. The Act recognizes the important role that Aboriginal Peoples play in wildlife conservation and the need to consider Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge (ATK) in the assessment of which species may be at risk, as well as in the development and implementation of protection and recovery measures. The overall goals of AFSAR are to contribute to the recovery of species at risk and their habitat, as well as to prevent other species from becoming a conservation concern.)
