The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is pleased to begin work on a new project, Activating Social Change Through Awareness & New Tool Generation.

Violence affects not only the individuals involved, but also the people close to them and the communities they live in. Without education, intervention, and support, these experiences can continue in an ongoing cycle of fear and violence. For Aboriginal women and children this can be extreme and in some cases, lead to death. What is required is a comprehensive, national effort to reduce violence and increase safety for the Aboriginal women and children living on or off reserve.

This project will respond to this need by raising awareness about the impacts of domestic violence, and through the promotion of community safety plans will promote the need for building safer communities for Aboriginal women and children. In addition, a listing of resources by region will be included to inform them of services they can access if they are victims of domestic or other types of violence. These foundational pieces are not only important but are key to preparing Aboriginal women and their families to actively participate in the Canadian economy, which first requires a sense of safety, well-being and empowerment to achieve the goals they set out for themselves and their children.
