Canada will soon be celebrating Memorial Day and the 100 Anniversary of the First World War and also the 75th. Anniversary of the start the Second World, Every available able bodied man Mi’kmaw man, enlisted in the Army to fight for the freedom of Europe.
The small Mi’kmaw Community of Lennox Island is proud to say that the Mi’kmaw people of PEI had made a great Contribution to the war effort in both of these world wars as well as in the Korean War, Vietnam Afghanistan and other peace keeping duties around the world.
This small community sent 34 men to fight in the First World War. It was not only a great hardship for these men, but it was very difficult for their families as well. Four of these courageous men made the Supreme Sacrifice, as they were killed in action. Although we say that they came from Lennox Island, there was only one Mi’kmaw Band on PEI at the time and it was called the Lennox Island Band it included, Morell, Scotchfort and Rocky Point. Many of the men who joined the army. Many of the Veterans lived in wigwams scattered around the Province of PEI, close to where their ancestor would have lived. There was no social assistance at the time. They made a living by hunting, fihing and trapping until the settlers killed off all their wild game. They then made Baskets, axe handles pick handles and other wooden tools need by the settlers.
