This October marked the 20th Year Anniversary of Mi’kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia. As part of the 20th Year Anniversary many initiatives were taken to highlight, promote and encourage people to take in events surrounding Mi’kmaw culture, history and heritage. One of the initiatives taken was the creation of the Mi’kmaq History Month website, www.mikmaqhistorymonth.com. It assisted many Mi’kmaw Communities, organizations, schools and businesses around Nova Scotia in highlighting and promoting events that took place in the month of October.
As Project Officer for Mi’kmaq History Month I had the privilege to attend a number of the events that took place throughout Nova Scotia. Let me firstly say how honoured and humbled I was to take part in these events. Our Mi’kmaw people and communities are truly and without a doubt kind and welcoming. We are talented, proud and determined to share and inspire others to the rich beauty that our Mi’kmaw history, culture and heritage have to offer.
