October 2013 will mark the 20th Anniversary of Mi’kmaw History Month in Nova Scotia. In 1993, the then Premier John Savage and Mi’kmaw Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy declared October as the official month to recognize and celebrate Mi’kmaw culture and heritage.
As part of the 20th Anniversary, a website is being developed to highlight Mi’kmaw History Month and Treaty Day to promote events that will take place in and around Nova Scotia. The website will be launched in a few weeks and will help to promote public awareness, discussion and participation in Mi’kmaw cultural heritage and archaeology events, with a central focus on the month of October, but showcasing year round events.
The website will be used to support community activities, increase community engagement and highlight events taking place in Nova Scotia. It will provide an avenue to add events, share stories, collaborate and showcase Mi’kmaw culture and history. The website will also house up-to-date information on October 1st, 2013 Treaty Day events, which continues to be the kickoff of Mi’kmaw History Month.
Everyone is encouraged and welcomed to participate in Mi’kmaw History Month events.
