Renee Marshall, 38, of Membertou, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2013. Born in Truro, she was the daughter of James and Shirley (Stephens) Morris of Eskasoni. She was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. Renee was recently enrolled at NSCC; she loved mathematics and animals, especially dogs. Renee had aspirations to teach math to young people. She was also a trained beautician. She is survived by her husband, Paul John Marshall; three daughters, Tieicia, Justice, Kyera; a son, Corey; stepdaugthers, Renee and Hope; sisters, Ashley, Lucina, Mary Ann, Juanita, Beverly; brothers, Stephen, Jim-Bob, Van, John, Trevor, Chris; and by her close friend and cousin, Tabitha; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Kevin Sack and cousin, Joey. Visitation for the late Renee Marshall took place at the Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni on January 10. James Ronald Hepworth (Jim) of Millbrook, NS, passed away on Jan 2nd, 2013 at home after a determined battle with cancer. He was born July 9th 1945 in Toronto, Ontario to the late George and Viola (Allard) Hepworth. He was predeceased by brothers; George and John, and is survived by siblings Evelyn, William, Wayne and Phillip. Jim was the former spouse of the late Sandra Carol Julien. Jim joined the Royal Canadian Navy after graduating from High School, and was posted in the Halifax port from 1963-1966. After his service in the Navy, Jim was employed by Canada Post while residing with his wife and four children in Toronto. Jim then moved his wife and children to Millbrook, Nova Scotia in 1977. Jim was employed as a housing inspector for CMHC in the early 1980’s and in the late 1980’s resumed his carrier as a letter carrier with Canada Post. Jim became an entrepreneur in the 1990’s operating a small store and managing rental properties. Jim was a member of the Commissionaires Nova Scotia for many years. He also operated a taxi service and was a medical driver for Millbrook community members. Jim was a member in the Stewiacke Masonic Lodge # 98 AF&AM, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro and had volunteered in various organizations, including the Lions Club, Shriners, CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) and a member of the Nova Scotia Highlanders Military Rifle Association. He had been an avid outdoorsman and competitive rifle shooter. His interest in target shooting compelled him to volunteer in the mid 1980’s at the Truro Armouries, mentoring youth for target shooting and safe firearms usage. Jim was known locally for his sense of humour, his integrity, loyalty to his friends and family and his old school attitude in dealing with people. He was very protective of his children. Jim is survived by his four children: Jim Hepworth Jr, Michelle Hepworth, Louise Hepworth (Paul Macaloney) all of Truro, and Mo and (Shauna Blackadar) Hepworth of Moncton, NB. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; Jim jr., Vicky, Joey, Austin, Jessica, Julien, Nicholas, Alex, and Shamus. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Mary Jane Dennis passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2012 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born Dec. 23, 1935 in Barra Head, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Lena (Francis) Battiste. Mary Jane was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. Some of Mary Jane’s hobbies were playing bingo, double up, VLTs, playing cards and quilt making. She also drove the hospital taxi for over 40 years. She is survived by her children, Lena Joe (stepdaughter); Francis, Mabel, Paula, Joyce Bernard, Clayton (Catherine), Wendy Francis, Lyndon, Peggy, Glenda, Perry, Connie, Andrea, Vicki, Tabitha, Melanie, Christopher, Robin, Dale and Dawn. She is also survived by 75 grandchildren; 106 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great-grandchildren; by brother, Frederick Battiste and sister, Annie Brooks, Shubie, along with her many godchildren and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Dennis; daughter, Denise; son, Perry; stepson, Stephen; sisters, Mary May, Mabel, Theresa, Helen Francis, Mary Agnes Gloade and brothers, William Googoo and Steven Battiste and also by stepmother, Mary Googoo Battiste. Visitation for Mary Jane Dennis took place on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013. at the Gabriel Center, Eskasoni. Funeral mass was celebrated on Monday, Jan. 7 at Holy Family Church. Rev. Frank Bernard, age 81, of Pictou Landing First Nation, passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 19th, 2012 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Pictou Landing First Nation, he was a son of the late Chief William and Annie M. (Syliboy) Bernard. Frank lived most of his life in Pictou Landing First Nation except for 15 years he lived in Framingham, Mass. During his working years he worked doing landscaping. Frank was a member of the Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame for Native Hockey. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church. Frank enjoyed camping on Indian Island and was dedicated to traditional pow-wow’s. Surviving are: brother Leonard Bernard of Pictou Landing First Nation; sister: Katherine Helstowski of Wisconsin; brother: Colin Bernard of Pictou Landing First Nation; sisters: Mary Gladys Bernard of Pictou Landing First Nation; Bernadette Marie Bernard of Pictou Landing First Nation; Mary Elizabeth (Allan) Francis of Pictou Landing First Nation. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother Bernie Bernard; a sister Yvonne Marie Bernard; a sister Mary Agnes and a brother Patrick in infancy His remains will rest in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Pictou Landing First Nation for visitation, from where funeral Mass was held with Father Gary MacPherson officiated. Burial will be in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery. Donations in memory of Frank may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Fund, Indian Island Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church or to a charity of one’s choice. Corinna Johnson – It is with great sadness that the family of Corinna Johnson, 43 of 19 Sugarmaple Lane, Eskasoni, announce her passing on Dec. 30, 2012 in Eskasoni. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Andrew Ben Johnson of Eskasoni and the late Brenda Poulette. She was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni and for a number of years she worked as an adult care worker. Corinna was known for her good cooking, playing bingo and loving her family and especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Dean Paul; daughter, Francella Johnson (Dale Dennis); four grandchildren, Antlé, Charity, Teara and Denise; two brothers, Tommy and Sonny (Cheryl); six sisters, Margaret (George), Janet, Audrey Anne (Howie), Charlene, Melinda Herney, all of Eskasoni and Marcia (Arthur), Chapel Island. Also survived by several godchildren, Rainbow, George, Bladen, Susie Jane, Lucia and Charlie Joe, and by numerous nieces, nephews, friends and by her stepmother, Louise Herney Johnson.
