2012 marks Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th Anniversary of Accession to the Throne. Monday, October 1, 2012 – As part of the Treaty Day celebrations and the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia, His Honour The Lieutenant Governor presented Kji-Saqamaw Ben Sylliboy and Kji-Keptin Andrew Denny with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal along with Mi’kmaq members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Mi’kmaq Nation Grand Chief, Ben Sylliboy was in awe when a special ceremony was held during the Treaty Day Celebrations in Halifax when Chief Rod Googoo of We’koqma’q presented Mi’kmaq Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy a new headdress on behalf of his council and community. The headdress was specifically designed for the Grand Chief by renowned headdress maker, Bill Burnstick (Pictured in the photo on the right above Ben Sylliboy’s shoulder) of British Columbia. Bill Burnstick made a special trip with the headdress to ensure the headdress arrived safely in Halifax and in time for the Treaty Day Celebrations. The colour sequences are that of Grand Chief’s favourite hockey team (no team mentioned) and the Mi’kmaq hieroglyph symbols on the head band translate to, “One Nation United Forever.”
