The Listuguj Mi’gmaq community in the Gaspé will carry out their food, social and ceremonial lobster fishing in Chaleur Bay between September 15 and October 4, 2012. This fishery is protected under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, which recognizes and confirms the ancestral and treaty rights of the aboriginal peoples of Canada. It is authorized under an agreement between the Mi’gmaq community and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).
Members of the Listuguj Community will fish only in fishing area 21B (Chaleur Bay) and are entitled to use a maximum of 500 traps in total. A strict monitoring protocol has been established, and DFO fishery officers will closely monitor activities in collaboration with Rangers from the Community of Listiguj. Listuguj Rangers will also inspect landings, compile statistics and assist in efforts to prevent poaching, in collaboration with the Department’s fishery officers.
