ADEMA, Carl, – 52, Indian Brook, passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his loving wife, Vera Marr. Born in Truro, Nova Scotia, he was the son of Jane (Paul) Adema of Indian Brook. He is survived by his wife, Vera Marr and daughters, Janine Adema and Megan Marr, both of Indian Brook. Besides his mother, he is also survived by his godfather, Chief Lawrence Paul of Millbrook, his brothers Peter Adema, Halifax, John Adema, Indian Brook, and sister Oona Cooper of Amherst, Godchildren, Margie Paul, Coral Paul, and Kendra Paul, all of Indian Brook, and many nieces and nephews. Carl is predeceased by his grandparents William and Sarah Paul and Godmother, Rhoda Ann Paul, all of Indian Brook. He will be sadly missed by his co-workers at Mi’kmaq Family & Children’s Services, a special group of people for which Carl had a straight forward charm and mutual respect. He will be missed by his buddies and Shirley Taylor of Indian Brook, a lady for which Carl had great affection. Special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Lorraine Pelly, Dr. Courtney Smith and Dawn Martel of Palliative Care Services and the V.O.N. for the compassion and care they showed Carl and the family during this difficult time. Visitation was held at the Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. A service in celebration of Carl’s life was held on October 21, at St. Catherine’s Parish, Indian Brook. Brooks, Sonya – 42, of Indian Brook, passed a suddenly Saturday, October 2, 2011. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of John MacKay and Eileen Brooks. She was a resident. of Indian Brook all of her life. She was a Traditional native that practiced traditional ways of native people. She loved making Indian handcrafts such as dream catchers and native artifacts. Sonya loved to fish. She was a member of Narcotics Anonymous. Surviving are her common-law husband, Chris Murphy; daughters, Siobhan Beach, Stephanie Beach, Shavanna Beach, Shaylah Murphy-Brooks, Tana; sons, Michael and Christopher; grandchildren, Blaise Beach, and Tieanna, Sophie; sister, Shelly Brooks-Boutilier and brother, Vincent Carl Benson; aunts, Patricia Brooks, Connie Brooks,. Katherine Leslie, Jennie Paul, Mary Brooks and uncles, David Brooks and Victor Brooks, her best little friend, Vicky. She was predeceased by her grand-parents/god parents, Benjamin and Christine Brooks. Visitation will be held. in the home of Eileen Brooks, 466 Robinson Rd., Indian Brook. Bannon, Kevin Alexander, 41, Millbrook First Nation, passed away suddenly on October 26, 2011. Born in Truro he was the son of Louise Bannon and Keith Julien. Kevin?s greatest love was his family, especially the children. Kevin loved computers, hunting and spending time lobster fishing. He was a very generous and kind-hearted man who will be sadly missed by all who knew him, especially by his family and many friends. Besides his parents he is survived by his son, Rodney Prosper, Pictou Landing; sisters, Lisa (Joel) Spence, Truro, Kristin (Kris) Sylliboy, Millbrook; brothers, Keith L. Julien, ‘Sandy Joe’ (Tina) Julien, Jonathan Julien; grandfather, Alexander Julien, all of Millbrook; step-mother, Theresa Julien, Millbrook; step-father Ray Metlin, Truro; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Jamie Power; grandparents, Margaret and Casey Power; grandmother, Martha Julien; great grandmother Annie Stevens. Googoo, Mary Katherine “Mary Kay” 71, We’koqma’q First Nation, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2011 in Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck. Born in Antigonish Landing, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Sara (Bernard) Young. Mary Kay was a woman of many talents. She was well known for her basket weaving, and owned and operated the Negemow Basket Shop with her husband for over 40 years. She was a member of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Waycobah. She was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, godmother and friend. Surviving are her children, John Angus; Sue Evans (Ray Evans); Cynthia Sark (George Sark); Stephen T. Googoo; Keith D. Googoo; Eleanor Googoo, all of Waycobah; sister, Jane Abram, Millbrook; granddaughters, Elaine, Kira, Cynthia, Asha, Jade and Sara, grandson, George, great-grandson, Andrew, godchild, Sylvia Googoo, sisters-in-law, Josephine Peck, Wagmatook; Caroline Marshall, Membertou, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Angus Andrew Googoo, sisters, Isabelle, Margaret, Alice, Helen, Clara, Eleanor, Tina, brothers, Tom and Morris. Caroline Gould – 91, Waycobah First Nation, born in Chapel Island on October 25, 1919, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, friends and relatives at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, on Saturday, October 22, 2011. She is survived by daughters, Ethel Johnson (Howard), Eskasoni; Marjorie Gould, Waycobah; Margaret Pelletier (Richard), New Mills, N.B.; Eunice Gould, Eskasoni and Annie Gould, Eskasoni. Caroline is also survived by brother-in-law, Noel J. Gould; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Caroline was predeceased by her husband, Roddie J. Gould; parents, Michael L. and Janie (Peck) Paul, Chapel Island; 11 siblings, and six grandchildren. Caroline was a respected Elder, mentor, teacher, and a renowned basketmaker who made great contributions to the preservation of Mi?kmaw culture, language and the arts. Among her many awards and distinctions in recognition for her artistic accomplishments in Basketry, she was honoured by being delegated by the province of Nova Scotia and the Mi’kmaq Nation to present a basket to Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Nova Scotia on June 28, 2010.Visitation took place at 160 Reservation Rd. (Fishery Building) on, October 27. Funeral service was held at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Blessed Kateri Parish, Waycobah, October 29, 2011. Father Robert McNeil officiated. Burial followed in the parish cemetery. Thomas N. Herney, 66 of 5003 Shore Rd. Eskasoni, died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Noel P. and Julia (Paul) Herney. He was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. Tom was a medical driver for 10 years. He was a carpenter by trade and a cabinet maker. Besides his wife, the former Hazel Cremo, he is survived by his daughter, Melinda; granddaughters, Julianna (Louie); Keeley-Shaye, Keyanna, Kellee-Mazey; his one and only great-granddaughter, Carley; one brother Michael; three sisters, Louise (Andrew) Johnson, Janet Herney, Linda Herney, all of Eskasoni. Also surviving are godchildren, Glynis Sylliboy, Elizabeth Cremo-Oakley, Roderick Johnson Jr., Noel Elias Herney, Kirk Peck Sr., Layla Paul, Nancy Mae Paul, Sherman Cremo; nieces, nephews and special friends, Auriel, Cady, ‘Ding’ and John Boy. McLEOD, Mary Elizabeth – After a valiant battle at C.-K. Health Alliance Chatham Campus, on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, Mary “Elizabeth“ McLeod, age 61, beloved wife of the late Bruce M. McLeod (2005). Born in Truro, Nova Scotia in 1950, daughter of the late Bridget (Christmas) and Charles Brooks she was proud of her Micmac heritage and had a deep love of her native Nova Scotia. She is survived by brother Stan Brooks of Truro; 3 sisters Barbara Brooks of Halifax, Madeline Craft of Peterborough, and Agnes Watson (Pete) of Simcoe; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers Jacob and Tommy and a twin sister Margaret. Friends and relatives visited at the St. Agnes’ Church on Oct. 7, where a Mass of Christian Burial was also celebrated there. MEUSE Joseph Leo “Junnie”, Indian Brook. The family sadly announces the passing of “Junnie” on Tuesday, October 18th, 2011 at the Colchester Regional Hospital Truro. Born 63 years ago to Elizabeth “Libby” Meuse and the late Joseph Meuse of Indian Brook. For a number of years he was employed as a cook for the Boston Celtics when they were at their summer camp in Cape Cod. Junnie also was a carpenter, drywaller and fisherman. Presently he was employed at Springhill Institution. Junnie was a Traditionalist Elder, Sacred pipe carrier and Sundance Chief. He was in the movie Scarlet Letter. He survived by his wife Evelyn, children Amber Paul, Faith Meuse, Olivia (Tommy J.) Howe, Kebrina Meuse, Francis Paul; sisters Elizabeth (Anthony) Nevin, Philomena (Harold) Morrison; 14 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; godparents Annie Paul, numerous godchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Joseph Meuse, son Eric Meuse, sister Linda Meuse, brother William “Yogi” Meuse, godparent Bruce Meuse. Paolini, William Francis “Skippy” – 77, Indian Brook, passed away in Windsor Elms Village on October 24, 2011. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of William Paolini, USA, and the late Rose (Innaco) Paolini. He was brought up by his grandmother Louise Innaco. He resided in Canada for the past 41 years. “Skippy” worked on construction and on farms for Dr. Ross Ainslie, Dr. Jim Shive and Joe VanDeRiet as a farm laborer. He is survived by his wife Rebecca “Beckie” (Paul), his children Sheila Rose Paolini, Brad Francis Paolini, Janice Marble and Amanda Jane Paolini; brothers Ronald, Mickie, Ted, Bruce and Herbie, sister Deborah all of New York, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Mary Lou and Gerry. Rowe, Gary It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary, who leaves behind many loving family members and dear friends, too numerous to mention. Born in Quebec October 16, 1956, Gary peacefully passed one day before his 55th birthday after a lengthy brave battle with cancer. Gary found his calling in life during the storm of `96 when he compassionately volunteered at a nearby senior’s home. Since then he has worked as a Home Support Worker offering support and care to others in their time of need. As Gary wished, he passed away at home surrounded by his many loved ones, with his two dogs at his side. We would like to thank the caring Hospice Nurses and Home Care Workers who lovingly helped him through this journey. There was a Celebration of Life at the Army Navy & Airforce Club, 9831 4th Street, Sidney, B.C, October 29th at 1:00pm. Flowers were gratefully declined.
Sack, Yvonne Lorraine – 60 of Indian Brook Hants Co. passed away Monday October 10th, 2011 at the Colchester Regional Hospital Truro. Born in Afton she was the daughter of the late Peter and Anne Mary (Francis) Syliboy. She has been a resident of Indian Brook for most of her life and travelled many times on the annual Pilgrimage to St. Anne de Beaupre’ in Quebec. She also enjoyed playing Bingo both radio and on TV. She is survived by daughters Helena and Gail both of Indian Brook and sons Michael and Edward (Shannon) of Indian Brook and grandchildren Drake, Kylie, Levi, Keyan, Thomas, Roman, Xavier, Eddie, and great grandchild Ethan, sisters Mary Rose Watts (Eric), Phyllis Prosper (John) Marie Pictou (David) and Eleanor Brooks, brothers David Francis (Sally), Robert Pictou and Christopher (Denise) Pictou. She was predeceased by her husband Levi and a daughter Leigh Anne. Lorraine rested at her late residence 170 Tuff Street Indian Brook. Darlene Kelley Sylliboy, 38, of Eskasoni, passed away suddenly Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at home. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Mabel Morris of Eskasoni and the late Fred Sylliboy Sr. She was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. Darlene was a very creative and passionate person who loved to express herself through many ways, including art, poetry, painting and especially through her words in writing. She also got much enjoyment through listening to music. Sylliboy, Thomas F., 75 of Paqtnkek First Nation, Afton, Antigonish County passed away on October 31, 2011 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Heatherton, he was a son of the late Francis and Mary (Julian) Sylliboy. Tom was a carpenter most of his working life. He was a survivor of the residential school system. He was an activist for Native rights. Following a successful court case, he helped pave the way for Native fishing rights, Tom was a respected elder of Paqtnkek First Nation and carried the Olympic Torch prior to the 2010 Winter Olympics. He was an avid sportsman and volunteer fire chief. He enjoyed playing bingo and was a regular worker at the games. He is survived by children: Fred (Marie) and Dorothy (Andy) of Paq’tnkek First Nation; grandchildren: Virginia, Christopher, Emily; great grandchildren: Nyesha, Kiana, Chuck, Janissa “J.J.”, Ethan; sisters: Annie Dionne, Dunvegan, Ont.; Marie Fluke (Rick), Marble Mountain and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Isabel (Paulette); daughter, Ann Isabel; brother, Matthew and brother, John in infancy. Visitation was held at the home of his daughter, Dorothy at 41 Sagamaw Road, Paqtnkek First Nation. Funeral Mass was be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church, Heatherton. Martha Ann (Herney) Treige, 39, passed away peacefully, with her loving husband, family and friends by her side, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Oct. 21, 2011. Martha was the daughter of Louise Poulette and the late Louis ‘O Boy’ Herney. She survived by her loving husband, David Treige; her sons, Kirk Peck Jr. and Louis Peck; her mother, Louise Poulette; her sister, Wanita (Clark) Paul; her brothers, Mathew (Tracey Young) Herney, Steven Herney, George (Natashia Sylliboy) Herney; many neices and nephews and four godchildren, Maynard Young Jr., Morgan Herney, Ashley Cabot and Raylene Cabot. Martha was a loving wife and mother, she was fun loving and helpful to her family and friends; she loved dancing and won various dance competitions. She was predeceased by her daughter, Tara Herney; her father Louis ‘O Boy’ Herney and two sisters, Mary Madeline Herney (in fancy) and Catherine Herney.
