Mi’kmawey Forestry – Forestry Stewardship Officer
The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing seven, Mi’kmaq communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM is located in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community in Nova Scotia and has over 60 Employees. The CMM’s Mi’kmawey Forestry Program is currently looking for an energetic, mature and independent candidate to fill the role of a Mi’kmawey Forestry Stewardship Officer.
Mi’kmawey Forestry is an initiative of the CMM and is mandated to develop capacity, programs, and services that will support productive and meaningful First Nation participation in all aspects of the forestry sector in Nova Scotia.
Reporting to the Mi’kmawey Forestry Manager, the Mi’kmawey Forestry Stewardship Officer is responsible for providing technical support to the DENR Director and Forestry Manager on all forestry related initiatives; and, will provide technical advice to Mainland First Nation Communities. S/he will be responsible for developing, reviewing and ratifying forestry management plans, conducting forest certification, assisting with land delineation initiatives, executing a Black Ash project and taking direction from the DENR Director and Forestry Manager on Forestry related matters while assisting with ongoing projects.
Position Requirements:
- Post-secondary education in Forestry, Wildlife Biology or a related field.
- Two years working experience in Forestry, Wildlife Biology or a related field.
- Knowledge of research methodologies and standards pertinent to environmental issues related to Forestry management.
- Experience working in or with First Nation communities.
- Excellent presentation, teaching and training skills.
- Knowledge of current First Nation community challenges and opportunities relating to the Forestry Sector.
- Excellent reading and writing skills
- Demonstrated communication skills both written and oral.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft word, Power Point presentation and Adobe acrobat.
- Able to travel overnight and work overtime when required.
- Driver license, vehicle and the ability to travel.
Salary/Employment Term: $30,000 – $35,000. This is a one-year contract with the opportunity for renewal.
